Following the completion of filming on The Gray Man, all that remains is for us to wait and see what Netflix’s biggest-ever movie has in store for us.
If you’re not excited about the movie, it simply means that you don’t understand what it is about. The spy thriller reunites the Avengers’ Anthony and Joe Russo with Chris Evans, as well as a star-studded cast that includes your favourite characters from James Bond, Bridgerton, and other popular franchises, among others.
The Gray Man, which has a reported budget of $200 million and is based on the 2009 novel of the same name by Mark Greaney, could very well be the start of a new franchise for the Russo brothers – at least that is the plan at this point.
For the time being, let’s go over the basics of The Gray Man’s character and history.
The Gray Man release date on Netflix
In July 2021, filming for The Gray Man came to an end, and Joe Russo told Variety that the movie will most likely come out in the summer of 2022 on Netflix.
“Right now, we’re working on The Gray Man with Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans, which is scheduled to be released this [coming] summer,” director Joe Russo explained. We’re hard at work on it in the editorial department.
“I believe we’ll be able to lock down a date for that sometime in February.” We’ve got some major visual effects to work on in it. So the scoring and visual effects work will continue until the film is released.”
The film will be shot in Europe from March to July 2021, with the European portion of the shoot taking place in Prague, Czech Republic, and Chantilly, France, a lavish 19th-century castle located near Paris.
The grey man plot summary
Only the central hook of a “deadly conflict between killers” is known about The Gray Man’s narrative.
According to the novel, Gentry is on a journey across Europe to rescue his handler, Sir Donald Fitzroy, from Lloyd, who wants Gentry assassinated in order to complete a billion-dollar transaction for Nigerian oil interests. A direct adaptation of the novel isn’t apparent, although it’s possible that other parts from the book series may be used.
When it comes to The Gray Man, Mark Greaney’s ten-book series, we already know that it will be turned into an MCU-like series, with Gosling returning for subsequent films. It’ll be different from the previous movie because “we’re not going to answer every question in the first movie,” as Joe Russo put it.
“As a series of films, we may follow more characters in the future, but we’re not going to address every question in the movie. While the movie is over and the tale is concluded, you’ll still have questions about the larger world.
“In my opinion, not presenting the audience with everything they could possibly want in a single film is one way to shake things up a bit. Don’t have a story that ends with a cliffhanger. Have a chapter-like storyline that’s open-ended.”
The Russos said they’d “want to bring new voices in” if The Gray Man is a success on Netflix, but it doesn’t imply they’ll do every movie. They added that they’d “love to bring new voices in.”
In comparing the picture to Heat, Russo said, “It’s a lot like Heat.” “It’s De Niro vs. Pacino all over again as two major cinema stars square off. This is a high-octane action picture.
“Both actors put forth fantastic performances, and they’re pitted against each other throughout the film. Chris Evans makes a delectably psychotic villain in this film. It’s pretty entertaining to see him play a sociopath. As a result, I expect a lot of fun.”
The Gray Man cast
Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling lead the cast, with Gosling portraying a former CIA officer who works as a freelance assassin (AKA the titular Gray Man).
Former CIA coworker Lloyd Hansen (played by Evans) is assigned to track down the Gray Man and is thus cast as the film’s antagonist. In their words, “He’s a really distinctive character. And this is Evans as a villain so it’s extremely exciting.” The Russo brothers believe Evans will get to flex quite a bit in this part.
Evans’ Knives Out co-star Ana de Armas, who most recently appeared in No Time to Die, and Bridgerton breakout star Regé-Jean Page have since joined the cast.
With such high expectations for everyone involved in every area, “The freakiest thing about working on a Russo set is that they don’t police you through everything,” Page remarked of the movie he worked on.
“Like, “Here’s this ridiculously hard thing; do it.” And then they want you to be able to accomplish it because they don’t hire people who aren’t able to do it.”
Billy Bob Thornton will play Gentry’s former handler Donald Fitzroy, and de Armas will play Agent Dani Miranda, who aids Gentry in his quest for survival. Those are the only other parts we’ve heard about thus far.
Jessica Henwick, Wagner Moura, Dhanush, Julia Butters, Alfre Woodard, Eme Ikwuakor, Scott Haze, and DeObia Oparei round out the strong cast. For the time being, their exact duties are being kept a secret.
