A man, Anyanime Festus was on Tuesday, February 15, sentenced to de*th by h*nging by Honorable Justice A. A. Onyebueke of Cross River State High Court, sitting in Akamkpa for k!lling his 11-year-old twin daughters, Mfoniso and Emediong Anyanime, after he dubbed them witches.

It is reported that Anyanime k*lled the duo in January 11, 2017 in Uyanga community in Akamkpa Local Government Area of the state. It was gathered that the two female identical twins were found lying along Uyanga bush track in Akamkpa, with one of the twins — Mfoniso— found de*d while the other was lying down and was unable to speak.

Much later, the other twin, Emediong Festus, revealed that on Jan. 10, 2017, their father told them he was taking them to their mother, and on getting to a bush path, he gave them a drink laced with po!s0n. She said shortly after they drank it, her sister d!ed and their father abandoned them there.

Unfortunately, Emediong later d!ed in the hospital and their corpses deposited at the General Hospital, Akamkpa, for autopsy. Anyanime, who is in his 50s, could not defend his allegation of witchery against his daughters when cross-examined. According to a child rights activist, Mr James Ibor, whose Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BCRI) facilitated the prosecution of the accused, the case was first reported in February 2017, which led to the immediate arrest of the convict by the police after due investigation.

Findings confirmed that the police ensured necessary medical examinations and autopsies were done on the deceased children, which aided the judgment.
Ibor described the judgment as a great victory to the victims in particular and the Government of Cross River State.
